Summary

Set in a rich, high-fantasy world inspired by ancient Rome, Sabaa Tahir's AN EMBER IN THE ASHES told the story of Laia, a slave fighting for her family, and Elias, a young soldier fighting for his freedom。

Now, in A TORCH AGAINST THE NIGHT, Elias and Laia are running for their lives。

After the events of the Fourth Trial, Martial soldiers hunt the two fugitives as they flee the city of Serra and undertake a perilous journey through the heart of the Empire。

Laia is determined to break into Kauf—the Empire’s most secure and dangerous prison—to save her brother, who is the key to the Scholars' survival。 And Elias is determined to help Laia succeed, even if it means giving up his last chance at freedom。

But dark forces, human and otherworldly, work against Laia and Elias。 The pair must fight every step of the way to outsmart their enemies: the bloodthirsty Emperor Marcus, the merciless Commandant, the sadistic Warden of Kauf, and, most heartbreaking of all, Helene—Elias’s former friend and the Empire’s newest Blood Shrike。

Bound to Marcus's will, Helene faces a torturous mission of her own—one that might destroy her: find the traitor Elias Veturius and the Scholar slave who helped him escape。。。and kill them both。

This book is leagues ahead of the first book in the series。 After struggling through the first book, I found it hard to get motivated to read this one。 Boy am I glad I did。 There were a lot more opportunities for character growth and development。 I loved the dynamic between Elias and Laia and was pleasantly surprised by the insights in Helen's way of thinking。 Because Helene was no longer bound to Elias, I got to experience more of her character as a person on her own。 The first book portrayed h This book is leagues ahead of the first book in the series。 After struggling through the first book, I found it hard to get motivated to read this one。 Boy am I glad I did。 There were a lot more opportunities for character growth and development。 I loved the dynamic between Elias and Laia and was pleasantly surprised by the insights in Helen's way of thinking。 Because Helene was no longer bound to Elias, I got to experience more of her character as a person on her own。 The first book portrayed her as a lovesick girl, too tied up with Elias to be a character of her own。 The pacing was great, there was never a boring moment。 It was action-packed and filled with bloodshed。 The introduction of Harper was quite interesting as well。 There is so much room for his character in Helene's life and I look forward to reading what role he gets to play in the next book(s?)。 The one thing that bothered me was the obvious manipulation of Laia by "the betraying character"。 Laia appeared to be quite headstrong but was easily influenced by this character。 It felt quite obvious to me while reading and I was definitely not surprised when Laia found out what was happening。 I knew something was up but I didn't realise who this character actually was。 As for the Commandant and the Emperor, they appear to be incredibly intelligent。 Markus may be struggling severely with the grief of losing his brother but I don't think the book showcases quite as well how intelligent he is。 Next to that, the Commandant is such an interesting character。 Her backstory ties so well with how she has developped as a person。 She is sneaky and manipulative and always finds a way to come out on top。To conclude, I loved the pacing of this book and it was so much better than the first。 I will definitely continue this series but might take a break by reading a standalone first。 。。。more

3。7Ja wiem, że w tej książce nie ma nic niezwykłego i że to wszystko już się przewijało w innych seriach。 Ale bawiłam się przednio, nie zamierzam ukrywać。

Even though I didn’t like it as much as I did the first one, An Ember in the Ashes will always be my favorite series。 I wasn’t at all let down by Sabaa’s writing and loved most part of this book。<3

Didn't enjoy this one as much as the first (which has a major soft spot in my heart), but definitely did not see a few of the twists coming at all。 Didn't enjoy this one as much as the first (which has a major soft spot in my heart), but definitely did not see a few of the twists coming at all。 。。。more

It’s a 4,5 I think。 Loved the start, dragged a little in the middle and then loved the ending。 Can’t wait to see how Sabaa is going to fuck everything up in the next two books :)

This series continues to rock。 Be prepared for a tense read because there are such high stakes and so much goes wrong。 The narrative bounces between Elias, Laia, and Helene。 Usually when there are three point-of-view characters there's a weak one, but this novel stays strong through all three。 I loved the expansion of the worldbuilding, and the few twists and reveals。 There are still a lot more to uncover。 I'm looking forward to continuing the series。 This series continues to rock。 Be prepared for a tense read because there are such high stakes and so much goes wrong。 The narrative bounces between Elias, Laia, and Helene。 Usually when there are three point-of-view characters there's a weak one, but this novel stays strong through all three。 I loved the expansion of the worldbuilding, and the few twists and reveals。 There are still a lot more to uncover。 I'm looking forward to continuing the series。 。。。more

Nope。 Nope again。No, not ever。 I should have honored my semi-dislike of/mild distaste for the first one in the series。, rather than thinking maybe it would get better。 Let's just say it doesn't build on its strengths。 Nope。 Nope again。No, not ever。 I should have honored my semi-dislike of/mild distaste for the first one in the series。, rather than thinking maybe it would get better。 Let's just say it doesn't build on its strengths。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Compared to my previous review, I feel very confident that I'm gonna rate this a 4-4。5。 I think I enjoyed this far more than the first book。 It felt more intriguing and had me tense all the way through。 I loved how they showed more of the Gens (even though it wasn't a detailed description of them, I still enjoyed how they were added to the story)。 Also the addition of the Soul catcher, Cook's "plot-twist", and Tristas' cameo。I loved Helene and her povs here, and how we were able to see what was Compared to my previous review, I feel very confident that I'm gonna rate this a 4-4。5。 I think I enjoyed this far more than the first book。 It felt more intriguing and had me tense all the way through。 I loved how they showed more of the Gens (even though it wasn't a detailed description of them, I still enjoyed how they were added to the story)。 Also the addition of the Soul catcher, Cook's "plot-twist", and Tristas' cameo。I loved Helene and her povs here, and how we were able to see what was going on inside her head because there were only Laia and Elias in the first book, so I loved the addition of her chapters。 I would say I'm surprised by how much I loved Helene in this book。 You can see how torn she is with choosing to save her best friend or her family, whom she didn't get to spend much time with。 We also got to see a more in-depth look at her relationships with Elias, her family, her friends, and the people around her。 I also loved how we got to explore more about Laia's power here because I was really intrigued by it when it was first introduced in the first book。 Laia and Izzi's friendship was also really cute, especially since Laia always said that she didn't really have any friends and that her only friend was taken in a raid。 I was very frustrated every time Laia's love triangle between Elias and Keenan would appear but I think it also added depth into it。 This book made me smile, laugh, mad, and cry but I still loved it。 I'm going to start the next book tomorrow and I hope it just keeps getting better。 I am scared of the events that'll happen in the third book but I hope I can get through to it with minimal pain。 。。。more

Pretty good。 These are brutal books though。 They're not just violent, there is torture and betrayal。 Helene gets significant character development, Laia is deceived to the detriment of everyone, and Elias tries to trick Death。 There's a lot of tragedy。 It's hard to read。 Particularly it is hard to read Marcus' treatment of Helene's family。 I've already read the following book and it does not get easier to read。 I hoped this was a trilogy but no。 Pretty good。 These are brutal books though。 They're not just violent, there is torture and betrayal。 Helene gets significant character development, Laia is deceived to the detriment of everyone, and Elias tries to trick Death。 There's a lot of tragedy。 It's hard to read。 Particularly it is hard to read Marcus' treatment of Helene's family。 I've already read the following book and it does not get easier to read。 I hoped this was a trilogy but no。 。。。more

helene having her own pov makes this a good sequel。 it lets us see how she deals with people around her, now seen as a blood shrike, her beliefs and loyalty, her relationship with her family, and even her love。 i love her so much。 and i dedicate all this to her。 The woman in the mirror is not Helene Aquila。 She is the Blood Shrike。 The Blood Shrike is not lonely, for the empire is her mother and her father, her lover and her best friend。 She needs nothing else。 She needs no one else。She stands helene having her own pov makes this a good sequel。 it lets us see how she deals with people around her, now seen as a blood shrike, her beliefs and loyalty, her relationship with her family, and even her love。 i love her so much。 and i dedicate all this to her。 The woman in the mirror is not Helene Aquila。 She is the Blood Shrike。 The Blood Shrike is not lonely, for the empire is her mother and her father, her lover and her best friend。 She needs nothing else。 She needs no one else。She stands apart。 。。。more

Wow, what a ride! Following book one, I was hoping for a strong sequel and it delivered! The worldbuilding keeps being expanded in the most interesting ways。 There were political machinations galore, and I was here for it。 And of course, I am falling for these characters。。。 but dang, Sabaa Tahir does not hold back the punches!
